India’s farm exports to hit $55bn in 2025; ‘no tariff concessions on sugar imports’

New Delhi: India’s agricultural exports are seen to touch $55 ‌billion ‌in ‌2025, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry Piyush Goyal said ‌on Tuesday. Reuters quoted the saying that the government will not ‌allow any tariff concessions on sugar imports ‌under any trade deal.

The agriculture and allied sectors, such as animal husbandry and horticulture are closely linked to crop farming and play a vital role in diversifying rural incomes. As of July 2025, the government stated that Agriculture and processed food exports reached approximately USD 49.4 billion in Financial Year 2024-25, with processed food exports constituting around 20.4%. The processed food export has recorded a rise from 13.7% in 2014-15 to 20.4% in 2024-25.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently highlighted the necessity of making Indian agriculture export-oriented. He appealed to all the players to increase productivity and export strength.

PM Modi emphasised on focusing on high-value agriculture and mentioned the Budget 2026-27 proposals for region-specific promotion of crops like cocoa, cashew, and sandalwood. The Prime Minister noted that export oriented production would lead to rural employment through processing and value addition.
