Indian Railways’ transforming travel experience: Sanganeri design blankets for AC coaches

New Delhi: Indian Railways has started a unique initiative keeping in mind the comfort and hygiene for passengers. Now passengers travelling in AC coaches will be given beautiful printed blanket covers with the traditional ‘sanganeri design’ of Rajasthan instead of ordinary white blankets. The objective of this move is to provide better comfort to travelers and to promote the local textile art and artisans of the country.

The first phase of this scheme was started from Khatipura railway station in Jaipur. It was first used in the Jaipur-Ahmedabad (Asarwa) Express. Launching the initiative, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that AC passengers in trains will be given covered blankets in the train as well. If this project is successful, it will be implemented across the country. Also, the traditional designs of every state will be showcased in the railways, he added.

The Railway minster also mentioned that the blanket covers are washable, durable and easy to maintain. Their fabric has been carefully selected so that it remains hygienic and useful for a long time.

Vaishnaw said that this scheme is not limited only to the convenience of passengers, but its main objective is to provide a platform to Indian traditional textile art and local artists. ‘Sanganeri Print’, which is the traditional block printing style of Jaipur, will now be a part of railway journeys.

On this occasion, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also inaugurated development schemes worth more than Rs 100 million at 65 small and medium railway stations under the North Western Railway zone. These works include new and expanded platforms, digital display systems, coach position indicators and Integrated Passenger Information System (IPIS). The purpose of these reforms is to make travelers’ journey more comfortable, cleaner and modern.
