Indian Railways has introduced new ticket cancellation and refund rules aimed at stopping ticket black marketing while giving genuine passengers more flexibility.
The updated policy, announced by Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, will come into effect in phases between April 1 and April 15, 2026.
Why Railways Changed the Cancellation Rules
Ticket touts often book large numbers of seats and cancel them close to departure if they fail to sell them at higher prices. This practice reduces ticket availability for regular passengers and increases unfair price manipulation.
To tackle this issue, Indian Railways has linked refund amounts directly to how early a ticket is cancelled. The closer the cancellation is to departure, the lower the refund.
The biggest change is the introduction of a zero refund window starting 8 hours before train departure.
New Indian Railway (IRCTC) Ticket Cancellation & Refund Rules (April 2026)
Here is how Indian Railway (IRCTC) refunds will work depending on when you cancel your confirmed ticket:
More than 72 Hours Before Departure
If you cancelled your railway ticket more than 72 hours before the departure time, then you will receive the highest refund. Only a basic cancellation charge will be deducted per person.
Between 72 and 24 Hours Before Departure
In case you cancelled your Indian railway ticket between 72 and 24 hours before the departure, you will get a 75 per cent refund. About 25 per cent of the ticket fare will be deducted as a cancellation fee.
Between 24 and 8 Hours Before Departure
Tickets cancelled between 24 hours and 8 hours before the departure time will be eligible for a refund of 50% of the ticket amount. Half of the ticket fare will be deducted.
Less Than 8 hours Before Departure
In case you cancelled your confirmed Indian Railway ticket in less than 8 hours before deparure then no refund will be provided. The whole ticket fare will be charged as cancellation fees.
Summary: IRCTC Cancellation Refund Rules (2026)
| Time Before Departure | Refund Amount | Deduction Details |
|---|---|---|
| More than 72 Hours | Maximum Refund | Only a flat cancellation charge per passenger |
| 72 to 24 Hours | 75% Refund | 25% of the total fare will be deducted |
| 24 to 8 Hours | 50% Refund | 50% of the total fare will be deducted |
| Less than 8 Hours | Zero Refund | No refund permitted for confirmed tickets |
This step is expected to discourage last-minute cancellations by agents holding bulk tickets.
New Benefit: Change Boarding Station Up to 30 Minutes Before Departure
While cancellation rules are becoming stricter, Indian Railways has added flexibility in another area. Passengers can now change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before the train leaves.
This is especially useful in large cities where multiple railway stations serve the same area. Travellers stuck in traffic or travelling from a different part of the city can select a more convenient boarding point at short notice.
Cities where this change is particularly helpful include Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru.
What This Means for Travellers
The updated policy aims to make ticket availability fairer for regular passengers while reducing misuse of the system.
For travellers, the key takeaway is simple:
- Cancel early to get a higher refund
- Avoid cancelling within 8 hours of departure
- Use the new boarding station change option if your plans shift on travel day
With over 2.5 crore passengers travelling daily, these changes are designed to improve both availability and convenience across the rail network.
