Shreya Chakraborty played a key role in Hyderabad Royals’ run to the final of the Indian Pickleball League in 2025, despite not featuring in the early league-stage matches.
Drafted into the side during the playoff rounds, the Kolkata-born player delivered consistent performances in doubles and helped the team secure a place in the final.
Hyderabad Royals eventually finished runners-up, but their campaign was marked by strong performances from the outset of the knockout stage. Chakraborty’s partnership with international player Megan Fudge proved particularly effective, especially against Chennai Super Warriors in the Qualifier when they stunned Roos Van Reek and Aaliya Ebrahim.
Reflecting on her first Indian Pickleball League season, Chakraborty described the experience as memorable. “Overall, the journey was phenomenal. The vibes, organization, level of play, and most importantly, the exposure, guidance, and opportunities I received made it truly special,” she told Pickleball Now.
Known for her aggressive play at the net, Chakraborty said her instinctive approach suited doubles formats. “One of my biggest strengths in doubles is being aggressive at the net and enjoying a fast-paced game, which constantly puts pressure on opponents,” she said, adding that she admired Fudge’s tactical awareness and court presence.
Playing alongside Fudge was a highlight of the tournament for Chakraborty. “Playing alongside Megan was incredibly special and inspiring. We bonded really well, and coming from a college tennis background, having played in the same conference in college tennis made it even more meaningful,” she said.
Chakraborty also spoke about the growth of the sport in the country. “Indian pickleball has a huge future. In such a short time, we’re already seeing talent that can compete with international players,” she said.
She credited Hyderabad Royals head coach Rahul Belwal for maintaining their morale, particularly during phases when she was not part of the playing lineup. “Even during the early days when I wasn’t getting court time, he took the time to sit with me, motivate me, and keep me focused,” she said.
Despite falling short in the final, Chakraborty said the team’s performance reflected its preparation and unity. “Falling short in the finals was painful, but wins and losses are part of the game. I’m extremely proud of how our team showed up every single day,” she said.
