Indian Origin Man Arrested: Mehul Goswami of Indian origin living in New York secretly worked for a private company during his government job and earned Rs 40 lakh. Mehul Goswami was working remotely in the New York State office, which was his main job. Along with this, he also started working as a contractor in Malta’s semiconductor company GlobalFoundries from March 2022.
The matter came to light after receiving the email
According to media reports, the investigation was initiated against Goswami after an email was received. In the email someone alleged that he was doing two things at the same time. According to a CBS 6 News report, Inspector General Lucy Lang said that government employees are required to work with integrity. This alleged act of Mehul Goswami is to break that trust. He further said that doing another job while working for the state and using government money or taxes for this is wrong.

Arrested on 15 October
On October 15, the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office arrested Mehul Goswami on charges of grand theft. This is considered a serious crime in New York, carrying a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison. According to the new law of New York State, it is not possible to release Goswami on bail in this case. “Our office will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to bring to justice anyone who undermines the integrity of public service in New York,” said Inspector General Lang. Mehul Goswami worked as a project coordinator for the state and earned $1,17,891 in 2024, the Times Union reported.

Moonlighting means that a person takes on a second job or work in addition to his or her main job. Especially when he does this during his office hours or responsibilities. This is often considered wrong or illegal.
