Indian Navy veteran remain in Qatar jail: India finally responds on Purnendu Tiwary’s case

New Delhi: India on Friday reacted to the case of a former Indian Navy officer Purnendu Tiwary who is still lodged in Qatari jail in connection with a financial case. Tiwary and 7 other Indian Navy veterans were already acquitted in a high profile espionage case last year.

Some media reports citing family sources suggested that Tiwary was released by a Qatari court in a case of financial wrongdoing in 2025.

On being asked about Purnendu Tiwary’s case during weekly briefing, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the Indian government is constantly in touch with Qatari authorities on the issue.

MEA on Sheikh Hasina extradition

The MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the Indian government’s stand on the extradition of former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina remains unchanged.

Jaiswal also said follow-up meetings between foreign minister of two countries will continue after the visit of Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister to India.

What Jaiswal said on West Asia crisis

Speaking on the issue of West Asia crisis following a massive war between Iran and United States, Jaiswal said that Indian authorities are keeping a close eye on the region.

He also said confirmed that India has received an invitation to participate in the meeting on Strait of Hormuz being hosted by France and the UK.

What India says on energy supply disruption

Amid ongoing crisis in Middle East, the MEA spokesperson said India continues to support energy supply to countries in the region while at the same time taking full care of its domestic needs.

Due to the energy crisis caused by closure of Strait of Hormouz, India has supplied petroleum products to Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka helping these nations to meet their energy requirement.
