The Indian women’s kabaddi team put in a good display, beating Iran in a contest in their second Group A fixture at the Asian Games on Wednesday.
India, who are also the defending champions, won 37-23. In the early exchanges, Iran took the lead, as the Indian defence struggled to deal with opposition raider Saniya Marani.
India were on the brink of facing an all-out at 10-6, but Pooja, who was the last Indian on the mat, bagged a crucial two-point raid to prevent a disaster. It was the turning point, and India fought back, finally drawing level at 11-11.
The Indian defence, spearheaded by Bhavna Devi, recovered and began to manage Marani well. At halftime, India led 19-15.
After the restart, India began on a strong note. But with over seven minutes on the clock, a big three-point raid by Aynaz Zobran cut the deficit to 23-21, opening the contest wide open.
India responded again and executed a three-player super tackle on Marani to take back a 26-21 lead. It was another turning point, and India took control. Iran did try to force taking risks towards the end, but the Indian team managed to wrap up proceedings.
India defeated Bangladesh in the opener and will face Japan in their next Group A match. The Indian women are also in the semis now, with a medal assured. There will be no bronze medal matches, with both losing semifinalists getting a podium spot.
India won five medals on Wednesday, including one silver and four bronzes. Mirabai Chanu got her maiden Asian Games medal, a silver. Meanwhile, Jay Meena got a soft tennis bronze. It was a disappointing day for India on the shooting field as double Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker failed to secure a medal in the Women’s 10m air rifle event after finishing 5th.
