India will look to clinch the five-match T20I series when they take on the West Indies in the fourth match in Hyderabad on Wednesday. The hosts lead the series 2-1 and need one more victory to establish an unassailable 3-1 advantage, while the visitors must win to take the contest into a decider.
With both teams boasting explosive batters, another high-scoring encounter could be on the cards. However, the West Indies will need to find a way to contain India’s in-form top order if they are to keep the series alive.
India’s Explosive Batting Line-up Holds the Key
India’s top order has delivered consistently throughout the series, with Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan making valuable contributions at different stages. Their performances have allowed the middle order to operate without being placed under sustained pressure.
Abhishek was the star of the third T20I in Indore, scoring a blistering 69 off 30 deliveries, with six fours and five sixes. His knock helped India post a match-winning total of 223 runs.
However, the top order’s success has also limited the opportunities available to India’s middle-order batters. Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Naman Dhir may need to shoulder greater responsibility if the leading batters fail, particularly if India have to chase a challenging target.
West Indies Need a Plan to Stop Abhishek Sharma
The West Indies have struggled to contain India’s aggressive batting across the series. Shreyas Iyer struck his maiden T20I century in the opening match, while Samson and Kishan made life difficult for the visitors in the second game, which the West Indies won.
Abhishek then dominated the third T20I, forcing the opposition to reconsider its bowling strategy.
West Indies all-rounder Shamar Springer admitted that restricting the Indian opener was a difficult task. He said the team’s alternative approach was to adopt a defensive strategy and limit Abhishek to singles and twos.
The visitors will need to execute their plans more effectively in Hyderabad, especially during the powerplay, to prevent India from building another imposing total.
Sherfane Rutherford and Shai Hope Lead West Indies’ Charge
The West Indies have demonstrated considerable batting strength despite their challenges with the ball.
Sherfane Rutherford has been the team’s leading run-scorer in the series, accumulating 172 runs in three matches at an average of more than 57 and a strike rate of 189. His 12 sixes underline the threat he poses to India’s bowlers.
Captain Shai Hope has also been in impressive form, scoring 159 runs at a strike rate of 182. His contributions have helped the visitors maintain their reputation as a dangerous batting unit in T20 cricket.
The West Indies have remained competitive despite being ranked below the reigning world champions. However, they will need a more complete performance with both bat and ball to secure a victory in Hyderabad.
India’s Bowling Attack Faces a Tough Test
India’s bowlers cannot afford to relax against a West Indies side capable of chasing enormous totals.
The visitors demonstrated their chasing ability in the second T20I in Ranchi, where they overhauled India’s 249-run target in just 18.3 overs. Hope led the charge with a spectacular 102 off 45 balls.
In the third match in Indore, the West Indies again threatened to challenge India’s total. Shimron Hetmyer scored 43, Kamil Pooran contributed 42, and Springer remained unbeaten on 35.
Arshdeep Singh’s three-wicket haul ultimately helped India seal the match, while Naman Dhir provided valuable support with figures of 2 for 39.
India will need another disciplined bowling display to prevent the West Indies’ power-hitters from taking control of the contest.
Hyderabad Conditions Could Favour Batters
The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad has witnessed plenty of high-scoring cricket. The venue recorded an average first-innings score of around 209 across seven IPL matches this year, raising expectations of another batting-friendly encounter.
Dew is not expected to be a major factor under lights, but both teams will assess the conditions before deciding their approach at the toss.
Sunrisers Hyderabad teammates Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Nitish Kumar Reddy could feel particularly comfortable playing at a familiar venue.
India’s last T20I at the ground was against Bangladesh in 2024. The hosts registered a 133-run victory after posting 297 for six, with Samson smashing 111 off just 47 balls. The wicketkeeper-batter will be hoping to produce another memorable innings if given the opportunity on Wednesday.
