India on Monday said it has formally taken note of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) verdict that sentenced Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death. New Delhi added that it remains committed to the “best interests of the people of Bangladesh”.
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said India continues to support peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in Bangladesh. It emphasised that India will “engage constructively with all stakeholdersto that end.”
The response came hours after Dhaka urged New Delhi to immediately return Hasina and former Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. Both were handed the death penalty by the ICT over their alleged role in the deadly July crackdown on student-led protests that forced the Awami League government out of power.
