The Indian football team produced a spirited performance to hold 44th-ranked Panama to a 1-1 draw at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday, September 25.
Playing against a side that featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, India showed remarkable composure and intensity throughout the contest. The Blue Tigers took the lead in the 41st minute through Ryan Williams, who produced a stunning curled effort that left the Panama goalkeeper with little chance and sent the home crowd into celebration.
Williams’ goal carried added significance as the Bengaluru FC forward returned to the Kanteerava Stadium, a venue closely associated with his Indian football journey, to represent the national team.
India entered the match ranked 138th in the FIFA rankings, 94 places below Panama, but Khalid Jamil’s side refused to be intimidated by the gulf in rankings. The hosts remained organised defensively while also creating opportunities in attack.
Panama eventually found their equaliser in the 68th minute when Omar Valencia unleashed an excellent strike to make it 1-1.
India continued to push for a winner in the closing stages. Edmund Lalrindika and Manvir Singh found themselves in promising positions, but the Blue Tigers could not find a second goal.
The draw provides India with a significant confidence boost ahead of their upcoming fixtures against five-time world champions Brazil on October 3 and Uruguay on October 6, both in Kolkata.
India secure new FIFA Ranking
With the victory, India has taken a tiny step forward in the FIFA ranking. The 1-1 draw yielded the Blue Tigers +3.19 points, which means they have now 1088.12 ranking points. The added point took them a place higher to 137th in the latest rankings, as they leapfrogged Latvia. Panama, on the other hand, dropped a place to 45th after a -3.19 (negative) point accumulation in the match.
