India began their Test campaign in Sri Lanka on Independence Day 2026 as they returned to the island nation after nine years to play the oldest format.
Devdutt Padikkal led the way with a century as men dominated the opening day despite rain causing almost 20% of the overs not to be bowled. This is a game that is crucial to India’s qualification as they look to jump up from 5th and make it to the top two.
India Join Special Club
But even before a ball was bowled, India became part of a special club in Test cricket. Only England and Australia were members of it till now and West Indies are closing in. It happened the moment the toss took place as ICC laws consider the game officially counted once the toss happens even if not a single ball is bowled due to weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances.

A Major Milestone
What was the feat achieved? The Galle game is India’s 600th Test in the history of the format. By playing their 600th Tests, India are the 3rd to reach the milestone. Australia lead the pack with 1097 and England are 2nd with 883. West Indies are not too far behind this club as they have played 596 matches.
India’s Test Report Card
Out of the 599 Test before this, India won 186, lost 188, drew 224 and tied 1. The result of their 600th Test is yet to be determined. At the moment, they have lost more than they have won but they could make it level if they whitewash Sri Lanka. It’s not impossible. The last time they met in 2022, India whitewashed them 2-0 and in 2017 when they toured here, they whitewashed them 3-0. India have not lost a Test to Sri Lanka since 2015, have won their last five Tests on Sri Lankan soil and have not lost a Test series vs them since 2008.

India’s Test Origins
India made their Test debut in 1932 and won their 1st Test in 1952. Their first series win away from home was in 1968. History goes in their favour vs Sri Lanka. It remains to be seen how this series pans out. We shall know by August 27.
More Milestones to Come
Australia are the only ones with over 1000 Test appearances. England will get their soon and India shall in due time. But that is a long way off, and the players must take it one game at a time. The Gall Test is immediate business, the rest can wait.
