Former Indian pacer Varun Aaron has opened up on Jasprit Bumrah‘s workload and expected participation in India’s upcoming series against West Indies and Australia.
Bumrah is currently involved in the ongoing Asia Cup in UAE.
Aaron underscored the importance of Bumrah in each of India’s upcoming series irrespective of the format. He also predicted that despite India’s renewed focus on Test cricket, Bumrah might play only one Test and could be rested for an ODI in the forthcoming ODI series (prior to the five-match T20I series) Down Under.
“After the drubbing we got against New Zealand, I don’t think Gautam Gambhir or Shubman Gill – because it is his first home series as captain – I’m sure he does not want to give even an inch, not even a quarter. I think they are very serious about Test cricket. India have made a lot of accommodation for Bumrah. If you are managing someone’s workload to that extent, you want him in every series. I think they might manage Bumrah’s workload in the ODIs in Australia as well. He might just play two,” stated Aaron, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
The cricketer-turned-commentator wanted to see Kuldeep Yadav be an active part of India’s Test squad for the home series against West Indies. Aaron reckoned that Kuldeep deserves the opportunity that he has been waiting for in Tests for quite some time.
“All three (spinners) can bat, that is the best part of the Indian setup, where you have somebody like Axar, Jadeja, and Sundar. I hope that Kuldeep Yadav gets a game in this series, but if they choose that route, they can have three spinners who can bat. Kuldeep Yadav has been waiting too long in the wings, and he has been putting up performances in every competition, except Test cricket,” he added.
India are scheduled to play the final of Asia Cup 2025 against Pakistan on Sunday, September 28. Ahead of their final Super Four clash on September 26, they have gone unbeaten in the continental tournament in the five matches so far.
