India will look to build on their emphatic start to the five-match T20I series when they take on West Indies in the second match at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Friday.
The hosts secured an eight-wicket victory in the series opener in Lucknow and now have an opportunity to move 2-0 ahead. West Indies, however, will be determined to produce a stronger performance and level the contest. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 pm IST.
Iyer arrives in Ranchi after record-setting knock
India’s biggest positive from the opening match was the form of captain Shreyas Iyer. Coming into the chase after India lost both openers with 35 runs on the board, Iyer took control of the innings and finished unbeaten on 102 from 43 balls.
His innings included 10 fours and six sixes and powered India to 172 for two in just 14.4 overs. Iyer combined with Ishan Kishan for an unbeaten 137-run partnership, ensuring that the hosts completed the chase with 32 balls to spare.
The century was Iyer’s maiden hundred in T20 internationals and came at an important stage after a difficult run with the bat. His ability to anchor the innings before accelerating gave India a decisive advantage in the opening game.
West Indies batting showed promise but lacked finish
West Indies managed 171 before being bowled out in 19.1 overs, with Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford providing the bulk of the resistance.
Hope scored 52 off 37 balls, while Rutherford made 56 from 34 deliveries. Their partnership helped West Indies recover after they slipped to 44 for three during the powerplay.
India, however, kept striking at crucial stages. Naman Dhir made an immediate impact on debut, finishing with three wickets for 31 runs. Kuldeep Yadav claimed two wickets, while Axar Patel also contributed with the ball as the visitors’ lower order failed to add enough runs in the closing overs.
For West Indies, the challenge in Ranchi will be to convert promising starts into a competitive total while avoiding the middle-order collapse that allowed India to dictate the first match.
India’s selection choices under scrutiny
While India’s overall performance was convincing, there remain a few selection questions ahead of the second game.
Sanju Samson was dismissed for 11 in Lucknow and will be keen to make a stronger contribution in Ranchi. With several batting options available in the squad, the competition for places is likely to remain a talking point as the series progresses.
Young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is also among the players attracting attention. India have the option of making changes to the combination, although the winning side from the opening game gives the team management a settled base to work from.
The bowling department also offers considerable variety. The performances of Dhir and the spinners in Lucknow provided India with another effective option, while the pace attack can put pressure on West Indies during the powerplay.
Ranchi offers a different test
The move from Lucknow to Ranchi gives both teams a fresh set of conditions to deal with. India will want to maintain the intensity that allowed them to control the first match, while West Indies will need to adapt quickly after their opening defeat.
The second game is particularly important for the visitors. A win would bring the series back to 1-1 and remove the early advantage held by India. Another defeat, meanwhile, would leave West Indies needing three consecutive victories to take the series.
India’s immediate objective is simpler: another win would put them firmly in command and leave West Indies with little room for error in the remaining matches.
With Iyer in form, India’s batting showing depth and the bowling unit making an immediate impact in Lucknow, the hosts head into the Ranchi contest with plenty of momentum. West Indies will need a sharper performance across all departments if they are to prevent India from strengthening their hold on the series.
