The INDIA bloc has turned up the heat on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, passing a symbolic ‘public impeachment’ resolution against him on Saturday and preparing to take its ‘vote chori’ battle to the streets on Sunday with a mega rally in the national capital.
Resolution To Remove CEC Passed By INDIA Bloc
The “mock” Parliament proceedings, presided over by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, were held at the residence of Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and INDIA bloc leaders, MPs, civil society representatives and individuals who alleged wrongful deletion of their names from electoral rolls attended the meeting. The resolution to remove the CEC was passed unanimously with the raising of hands.
6 Big Charges Against CEC Gyanesh Kumar
The Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha listed out 6 charges against CEC Kumar, including a conspiracy to “steal” elections, “deletion” of 13.2 crore voters, “amending” Form 6 without Parliamentary oversight or knowledge, “seizing” electoral rolls through ECINET, “shutting out” the other two Election Commissioners and acting at the behest of PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
Kharge on Saturday demanded the immediate removal of Kumar and the scrapping of the 2023 law providing immunity to the CEC. Several Opposition MPs spoke during the ‘mock’ Parliament.
Public Impeachment Is Political Weapon: Rahul Gandhi
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi called the “public impeachment” of Gyanesh Kumar a “political weapon” targeted at those who “colluded” to destroy the votes of the Indian people. “Gyanesh Kumar will not survive as the CEC. We have enough evidence to ensure that this gentleman does not continue in office. If the BJP insists on retaining him even after we reveal, its game will be clear for everyone to see… I fully support the motion to impeach Gyanesh Kumar, who should be tried for treason in court and justice should be served,” Gandhi said.
Gandhi said it is strange that the opposition MPs and leaders had to gather in the garden of the (Rajya Sabha) leader of the opposition’s residence as all other institutions were shut for them. “I don’t think anything like this has ever happened in history: the entire opposition sitting in a garden to discuss the impeachment of the chief election commissioner of India,” Gandhi said.
“People gathered here have a message for the Gyanesh Kumars of this world: You are hiding behind the institution you have sworn to protect. Remember, you cannot hide behind it forever. One day, you will have to face the representatives of the people of this country,” Gandhi said, while supporting the resolution moved by Kharge.
Stage Set For INDIA Bloc’s Ramlila Maidan Rally
The INDIA bloc is all set to hold a mega rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday. Opposition leaders and supporters from different states have already started reaching the national capital.
The march, named ‘Chalo Dilli’, will begin at noon from the Minto Road-Connaught Place junction and culminate at Ramlila Maidan, where the rally is scheduled from 10 am to 5 pm. Leaders of the INDIA bloc are expected to travel in open buses from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence to the starting point of the march.
Earlier today, Rahul Gandhi invited people to join the Delhi march. In a post on X, Gandhi shared the route and timing of the march, saying, “See you tomorrow, let’s walk together.”
However, Delhi Police sources told news agency ANI that no permission had been sought for the proposed march from Connaught Place.
