According to the FAO Report 2025, India has reached 9th position globally in total forest area. Due to the Modi government’s afforestation and community conservation campaigns, greenery has increased rapidly in the country, due to which India is now included in the top 10 green powers of the world.
New Delhi. India has achieved another major achievement in the direction of environmental protection. According to the Global Forest Resources Assessment (GFRA) 2025 released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Bali, Indonesia, India has reached 9th position globally in terms of total forest area in the world. To whom did the Union Environment Minister give credit for the achievement?
This report has also shown that India has retained its 3rd rank in Annual Forest Area Growth. That is, every year the area of trees and forests in India is continuously increasing. Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav said that this success is the result of the ongoing “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign and community forest conservation efforts under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
How did India gain an edge in forests?
According to the Environment Ministry, over the years, lakhs of hectares of new forest areas were added in the country through the combined efforts of state governments and the general public. Which countries are ahead of India?
According to the FAO report, the world’s total forest area (Global Forest Area) is about 4.14 billion hectares, which covers about 32 percent of the earth’s land. Of these, 54 percent forests are in only five countries – Russia, Brazil, Canada, America and China. India has now joined the top 10 forest-rich countries in the world along with Australia, Congo and Indonesia.
Will India be able to make it to the top-5 in the coming years?
This big question is now under discussion. Because the three countries China, Russia and India are expanding their forests the fastest. The report shows that China added 1.69 million hectares of forests every year between 2015 and 2025, while India recorded an increase of 1.91 lakh hectares per year. If this pace continues, India may be included among the top-5 green countries of the world in the coming years.
