IND vs WI, 2nd Test, Day 1: Jaiswal’s big ton headlines India’s dominant show in Delhi

New Delhi: India stamped their authority over the West Indies on a dominating Day 1 of the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. The home side made the most of batting-friendly conditions and Shubman Gill’s decision to bat after winning his first toss as India captain.

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored his seventh century and remained not out on 173 to take India to 318 for 2 in 90 overs. Gill was the other unbeaten batter on the crease, batting on 20 as West Indies toiled hard on a punishing day for the bowlers.

The first day of the second Test was headlined by a special knock by Jaiswal, who started cautiously in the morning session, but shifted gears in the post-lunch session, completing the milestone in just 145 balls.

Meanwhile, Sai Sudharsan missed out on a deserved ton and was dismissed early in the final session for 87. Sudharasan’s innings ended after he was trapped in front by Jomel Warrican.

The Tamil Nadu batter played some sublime strokes in his 165-ball knock, which included 12 boundaries. He made his intentions clear by hitting the first ball he faced for a four.

Jaiswal’s superb knock put him in an elite list of batters, including Javed Miandad, Graeme Smith, Alastair Cook, and Kane Williamson, who have scored seven centuries before turning 24. His unbeaten 173 is the fourth-highest individual score made by an Indian opener on Day 1 of a Test match.

KL Rahul (38) was dismissed just before lunch, but it was the only positive for the visitors in the first session. Things got worse for them in the afternoon session as the Caribbean side went wicketless and conceded 126 runs.

Earlier, Gill won the toss and opted to bat in the second Test of the two-match series. The home side retained the same playing XI that had won the Ahmedabad Test by an innings and 140 runs last week.

Meanwhile, the West Indies made two changes, replacing Brandon King and Johann Layn with Tevin Imlach and Anderson Phillip in their playing XI.
