As the T20 World Cup 2026 is getting closer, Team India’s form is coming under question. Even though the Indian team won the title of Asia Cup 2025, even though it also won the T20 series on Australia tour, but on both the occasions the entire team did not seem to be in rhythm together and there was no champion quality in it. The same situation continues in the series against South Africa, where after winning the first match, the team lost the second and once again the same players came under target, who are constantly under question. Captain Suryakumar Yadav is also there, who accepted his mistake.
Captain Surya admitted his and Gill’s mistake
In the match played on Thursday 11th December in the new stadium of Chandigarh, Team India first allowed South Africa to score a big score of 213 runs. Then in response to this, the entire team except Tilak Verma failed miserably with the bat. The result was that South Africa won the match by 51 runs. The captain has the most questions in this defeat. Suryakumar and vice-captain Shubman Gill Rising from failure. While Gill was out on the very first ball, Surya scored only 5 runs.
After the defeat, captain Surya also admitted his mistake and admitted that he and Shubhman Gill should have taken the responsibility of scoring runs. In the presentation ceremony after the defeat, Surya said, “I and Gill should have given a good start in batting. We cannot always depend on Abhishek. I should have played a longer innings. We will learn from this and do better in the next match.”
Indian captain and vice-captain failed throughout the year
Although this is not the first time this year, when these two star batsmen of the Indian team have failed miserably, rather this is a continuing trend. In the first match of the series, while Gill was out in the first over after scoring 4 runs, Surya also scored only 12 runs. This year, the captain and vice-captain of Team India have not been able to score a single half-century. Captain Suryakumar Yadav, the former number-1 ranked batsman in T20, has only 201 runs in 17 innings in 2025, with an average of 14.35 and strike rate of only 126.
Vice-captain Gill’s condition is also bad. Gill has only 263 runs in his name this year in 14 innings at a modest average of 23.4. Questions are being raised on Gill’s place because Sanju Samson has to sit out of the playing-11 for him, while Yashasvi Jaiswal is not even being selected in the T20 team. In such a situation, obviously there are more eyes on these two and after accepting their mistake, the hope would be that both the batsmen can do something amazing in the next match.
