IND vs ENG: Yashasvi Jaiswal 97 runs away from breaking Sunil Gavaskar’s historic Test record

New Delhi: After losing the first Test in Leeds, Team India will take on England in the second Test in Edgbaston, Birmingham, on July 2. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul scored centuries, but the Men in Blue still ended up on the losing side.

Indian fielders also dropped several catches on the field, which proved costly for the team. Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped Ben Duckett’s catch on 15 runs in Jasprit Bumrah’s over, and the opener went on to score 62 runs. Jaiswal also dropped a catch of Ollie Pope on 62 runs, and he went on to score a century.

Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant dropped Harry Brook’s catch on 46 runs, while Jaiswal dropped the fourth catch on Bumrah’s bowling when the batter was on 83. Jasprit Bumrah was sensational with the ball and picked up his 14th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, but got very little support from the other end. Chasing the target of 371 runs, Ollie Pope, Zak Crawley and Joe Root batted calmly and helped England to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Yashasvi Jaiswal close to break 49-year-old record

Yashasvi Jaiswal is close to breaking Sunil Gavaskar’s 49-year-old Test record. The Indian opener has scored 1903 runs at an average of 52.86 in 20 Test matches. He needs just 97 runs to break the historic Test record. Gavaskar was the first cricketer to complete 10,000 runs in the longest format of the game and also holds the record for scoring the fastest 2000 runs by an Indian in his 23rd Test match in 1976.

Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag are the next batters in this elite list, having crossed the 2000-run mark in their 25 Test matches. With his elegant strokeplay and consistent run-scoring ability, Jaiswal had a great chance to break the historic record and hand Team India much-needed victory in the Test series.
