IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill just 53 runs away from incredible Record ahead of 5th Test

Shubman Gill has delivered an exceptional performance so far during the 2025 Test series against England, which has also marked his debut as captain.

He has scored four centuries, becoming the first batter to achieve this in their maiden captaincy series.

This achievement has placed him alongside some of cricket’s greatest, such as Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar, who have previously scored four centuries as captains in a Test series.

Throughout the series, Gill has amassed over 700 runs, becoming the first Asian to do so in a Test series played in England. His total of 722 runs has been the highest ever by an Indian batsman against England in a single series, surpassing previous records.

Among his innings, he has scored a maiden Test double century of 269 runs at Edgbaston, which has also become the highest Test score by an Indian captain and one of the highest away Test scores by an Indian batsman. Impressively, he has added 161 runs in the second innings of that match, accumulating a total of 430 runs across both innings, marking one of the greatest individual match aggregates in Test cricket history.

Shubman Gill 53 runs away from Record

The India captain is now just 53 runs away from becoming the highest-scoring batter for India in a bilateral Test series. Sunil Gavaskar holds the record for India currently, when he scored 774 runs in the 1970-71 series against West Indies.

The way Gill has handled pressure, especially in difficult English conditions and while leading the team for the first time, has reflected maturity beyond his years. Overall, his performance has been quietly remarkable and has set a new standard for Indian cricket in England as the series approaches its final Test starting July 31. India currently trail the series 1-2 and will be hoping to restore parity in the final encounter.
