New Delhi: Novak Djokovic has shared his admiration for the level of play displayed by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final. Alcaraz defeated Sinner in a thrilling five-set encounter that lasted 5 hours and 29 minutes. The Spaniard’s 4–6, 6–7(4), 6–4, 7–6(3), 7–6(10-2) win earned him the title but also marked what many believe is the beginning of a generational rivalry in men’s tennis.
Djokovic arrived at the French Open with the ambition to fight for his 25th major title, but after a strong run to the semifinals, he stumbled in straight sets against World No. 1 Sinner, who reached a Grand Slam final outside of hardcourts for the first time.
The Serbian has been training at Wimbledon with two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and praised him as the top favourite to win the title. He also talked about the Wimbledon balls and said that they’re slower than they are used to be and it is difficult to beat guys like Alcaraz.
“Carlos Alcaraz as the defending champion gets the right. I am the sparring partner. I am happy he chose me. Wimbledon balls are slower than they used to be. It makes it extremely difficult to get past guys like Carlos Alcaraz when they try to get to the net,” said Djokovic.
‘One of the most historic matches we have ever seen’: Djokovic on French Open final
Djokovic said that his wife wanted to watch the French Open final, but he didn’t want to watch it. The Serbian further added that he ended up watching the second half of the match and was left thoroughly impressed by the quality of tennis on display.
“To be honest, I was in my country. My wife wanted to watch the final, but I didn’t want to watch it. The first part of the match we went outside for lunch. We came back and I ended up watching it. Incredible, incredible match. Huge credit to both of them. It was one of the most historic matches we have ever seen” added Djokovic.
