Chimi Lhakhang Temple of Bhutan: A unique faith
The Chimi Lhakhang Temple in Bhutan, also known as the “Fertility Temple” (reproductive temple). It is located in Lobaa village in Punakha district of Bhutan. This temple is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kunle, which the local people know as “divine madman” i.e. “Gods”.
What is the story behind it
The biggest reason for getting such fame, Lama Drukpa Kunle used to teach traditional religious teachings in unusual, comic and symbolic ways. The story behind this is that he had defeated a demonic soul with his “penis power”, after which the cultural significance of the penis increased as his symbol.

History of Drukpa Kunle and Chimi Lhakhang
The Chimi Lhakhang temple was built by Nawang Chogyal, who is considered the 14th Drukpa Lama. The stupa located in the center of the temple is built in honor of Drukpa Kunle. According to the beliefs of the local people, Drukpa Kunle made a penis shaped stick to defeat a ghost and killed him and buried it in a stupa. Since then, the gender symbol is considered a sign of eliminating wicked powers and bringing goodness.
How to reach Chimi Lahkhang?
The Chimi Lhakhang temple is located in Lobaa village, about 10 km from Punakha.
There are two major avenues to reach here
- If you go by private taxi, you can go comfortably from Thimpu or Paro. The way to go to this temple from here is very straightforward.
- If you want, you can go from Thimpu or Paro to Wangdu in a local bus. You have to take a taxi from Wangdu and reach the temple.
