Paradip Rape Case: The incident of a 23-year-old woman being raped twice in a day and then thrown from a four-storey building in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district has shaken the entire state. Police said that first the woman’s boyfriend took her to a secluded place on the pretext of coming to the temple and raped her and then left her at the bus stand.
Who was the second accused and why did he pretend to help?
The victim was waiting at the bus stand when a stranger from Jharkhand was going to Paradeep on his motorcycle. He claimed to help, but took the woman to the rooftop of his rented house, raped her again and then threw her from the roof of the building. The next morning the woman’s body was found with head injuries.
Did the police take timely action?
The victim’s brother had earlier filed a missing report on February 22. On February 25, a case was registered at Paradip Model Police Station on charges of murder and rape of a woman. Police have arrested both the accused and a case is being prosecuted against them under sections of kidnapping, rape and murder.
What was the political and social reaction?
BJD supremo and opposition leader Naveen Patnaik condemned the incident. He said, “From young girls to disabled girls, no one is safe. Is there rule of law in the state?” He demanded the state government to take strict steps for the safety of women and maintaining law and order. The former CM said that the government only gives speeches, but an atmosphere of fear persists even in broad daylight. The ever increasing number of such cases has emboldened the criminals.
Is this incident just an isolated case?
News of such heinous incidents are continuously coming from Paradip, Angul and Sambalpur. The question arises whether any real action is being taken to protect women, or are criminals getting a chance to escape punishment?
