Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has publicly expressed support for actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh after “Satluj,” formerly titled “Punjab ’95,” was removed from the Indian version of the Zee5 streaming platform just 48 hours after becoming available.
The film’s removal has triggered widespread discussion on social media, with several members of the entertainment industry reacting to the development and voicing support for the team behind the project.
Ali shared an Instagram Story featuring a billboard poster of “Satluj” and wrote the message, “Tu Vaapas Aayega,” meaning “You will return.” The brief statement was widely seen as a message of encouragement to Dosanjh amid the controversy surrounding the film’s availability in India. The post also carried added significance because of Ali’s professional association with the actor and singer.
Imtiaz Ali and Diljit Dosanjh previously worked together on “Chamkila,” in which Dosanjh portrayed Punjabi musician Amar Singh Chamkila. They also collaborated on the recently released “Main Vaapas Aaunga.” Ali’s choice of words in his latest message appeared to draw on the idea of returning, while expressing solidarity with Dosanjh as debate continued over the removal of “Satluj” from the streaming platform in India.
Directed by Honey Trehan, “Satluj” is inspired by the life of Sikh human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. The film had previously been known as “Punjab ’95” and faced a prolonged four-year battle involving clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification. Its release had therefore been closely followed even before it began streaming, particularly because of the sensitive historical events connected to Khalra’s life and work.
The film reportedly became available on Zee5 before being removed from the platform in India around 48 hours later. Since July 3, the development has remained a major subject of debate on social media, with several celebrities and viewers questioning the decision. While the film is no longer available for streaming in India, it has continued to attract attention and discussion surrounding its content, release history and treatment.
Ali’s “Tu Vaapas Aayega” message has now joined a growing number of reactions from the entertainment industry to the controversy. His public support for Dosanjh has drawn particular attention because of the creative relationship between the filmmaker and actor. As debate over “Satluj” continues, the film’s removal from Indian streaming access has kept both the project and its long journey to audiences at the centre of public discussion.
