Impact of Iran US conflict: Domestic & commercial LPG cylinders become more expensive

Kolkata: You could perhaps call it the first adverse impact of the Iran US conflict on the common man. Both domestic and commercial cylinders have become more expensive in India. Prices have risen in every city. Oil marketing companies have raised the price of domestic LPG cylinders by Rs 60. 19-kg commercial cylinders have become more expensive by more than Rs 114. The new price has come into effect from March 7, 2026.

The rising prices in the global energy market due to the Iran US war have affected domestic gas cylinders in India. Oil companies have significantly increased the price of domestic LPG cylinders. This rise comes when inflation in inching up from the multi-year low levels seen late last year. This rise in prices applies to consumers who use non-subsidised cylinders. It must be noted that there has been no price rise for beneficiaries of the government’s Ujjwala scheme.

India’s LPG import dependence

LPG consumption in India is very high, and like petroleum India depends significantly on imports to whet the appetite. India’s total LPG consumption is approximately 33.15 million metric tons. Of this, approximately 67% comes via imports. West Asian countries contribute the largest share of this import. About 85-90% of India’s LPG imports come from the West Asian nations. There are about LPG consumers in the country.

Relief for Ujjwala Yojana Users

There has been no change in the price for gas connection consumers under the government’s Ujjwala Yojana. This means that poor families will not be affected by this increase for now. There are more than 10 crore Ujjwala connections in the country.

Prices rise for the second time in 11 months

Domestic gas cylinder prices have increased for the second time in the last 11 months. The last raise was in April 2025, when prices went up by Rs 50. In addition to domestic cylinders, commercial gas cylinders have also recently become more expensive. A 19-kg commercial cylinder used in hotels and restaurants has become more expensive by Rs 114.5. Now, its price in Delhi is R 1,883.
