Galle: Devdutt Padikkal celebrated the biggest moment of his Test career in the most understated way possible after scoring a magnificent 167 against Sri Lanka, saying all he wanted to do was get some sleep.
The left handed batter produced a career defining innings of 167 off 230 balls, guiding India to 460/9 at stumps on the third day of the rain interrupted opening Test in Galle. When asked whether he would celebrate his maiden Test century, Padikkal replied with a smile, “Not really. I’m tired, so I’m just going back to bed now.”
Padikkal was drafted into the playing XI as a replacement for the injured B Sai Sudharsan and made the opportunity count with a composed knock featuring 15 boundaries and a six. His innings has significantly strengthened his case to retain his place even after Sudharsan returns to full fitness.
Reflecting on the milestone, Padikkal said the hundred was the result of years of preparation and perseverance. He revealed that he had dreamed of scoring a Test century and had spent the last two years working hard to ensure he was ready whenever the opportunity arrived.
His innings stood out for its exceptional footwork and control against spin. Padikkal explained that India’s batters had focused on entering the crease with clear plans rather than relying purely on reaction, allowing them to put pressure back on the bowlers through their own strengths.
With Padikkal’s maiden century leading the way, India finished the day in a commanding position and will look to convert its dominance into a decisive advantage in the opening Test.
