IIT Guwahati Student Dies After ‘Fall From Academic Building’; University Expresses Grief

Athird-year B Tech student from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati died after allegedly falling from a building inside the University.

The police officials are now investigating the possibility of suicide in the case. The victim has been identified as Ritesh Raj Singh and was a student of the Computer Science and engineering department. Singh was originally a resident of Odisha and stayed at the Brahmaputra Hostel on campus.

Body Sent For Post-Mortem

The incident had taken place at around 2.30 pm on Sunday, July 26. The police officials claimed that he had fallen from the fifth floor of the institute’s academic complex. The youth’s body has been recovered and sent for the post-mortem examination.

Cops said that the exact cause of the death is yet to be ascertained. Further information will be provided after the autopsy report is received. The Kamrup Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the incident.

Police also said they have not ruled out the possibility of suicide, while statements of students and institute officials were being recorded as part of the investigation.

IIT Guwahati Reacts

IIT Guwahati issued a statement on Monday, saying, “The Institute is cooperating fully with the police, who are investigating the matter, and we are awaiting their findings before we share any further information on this matter,” the institute said.

The University said that Ritesh Singh’s parents were on their way to the campus and that IIT Guwahati has been in close contact with the family, extending all necessary support during the difficult time.

Expressing grief over the student’s death, IIT Guwahati Director Professor Devendra Jalihal described the incident as a profound loss for the institute and conveyed his condolences to the student’s family in a message to the campus community, according to local media reports.
