Temple Darshan Method: There are rules given in the religious scriptures for visiting the temple and after returning. Only by following these rules, one gets the full results and benefits of visiting the Gods and Goddesses in the temple.
An important rule in this is to sit on the stairs or platform of the temple while returning after visiting the temple. Many times people do not sit at all and come straight back, even if people do sit, they sit for the purpose of resting or talking to each other. Whereas this should not be done.
sitting on the steps or platform of the temple
Sitting on the pediment or stairs of the temple is not just a means of relaxing, but there is a special tradition and purpose hidden behind it. Nowadays people sit on the temple pedi and start talking about their home, business or politics, but in ancient times this pedi was a place of peace and meditation.
Read this verse while sitting on the steps of the temple
Whenever we visit a temple, we should come out and sit on a pedestal for some time and meditate on God. As soon as you sit on the steps of the temple, recite a special verse ‘Anayasen Maranam, Bina Denyen Jeevanam. Dehant tav sanidhyam, dehi me parmesvaram.’ Should be recited. This means that our death should be without any trouble, we should not die sick or troubled. Also, life should be such that we do not have to depend on anyone, we live on our own strength. Whenever death occurs, our soul goes before God and we receive God’s blessings.
The message in this verse is that we should not beg for worldly things. God gives things like house, money, job, son-daughter by his grace. Prayer means request and special request, while supplication is for worldly desires.
Keep your eyes open while visiting
While having darshan, one should keep the eyes open and fully enjoy the form, feet, facial expressions and makeup of the Lord. It is wrong to close our eyes because we have come for darshan. But after coming out, one should sit on the pedi and close one’s eyes and meditate on God and recite the above mentioned shloka.
If the form of God does not come to mind while meditating, then go to the temple again and have darshan and then sit on the pedi and meditate and recite the verses. This practice is mentioned in our scriptures and the traditions of our elders.
Its purpose is to ensure health, longevity and mental peace in our lives. Meditating in the temple with eyes open and sitting outside with closed eyes is a symbol of our reverence, meditation and devotion.
