Suryakumar Yadav, for as long as there’s Indian Cricket, shall be remembered for at least, 3 distinct moments connected to Indian cricket.
The first would be that milestone, in fact World Cup winning catch inches off the boundary rope at Kensington Oval, Barbados in the 2024 T20 World Cup final where off Pandya’s bowling he removed the dangerous David Miller. Second, he’ll be remembered for his brilliant captaincy thanks to which India won their third T20 crown in a belter of a final played against the BlackCaps at Ahmedabad to win the grand 2026 event. And he’ll always be remembered for striking not one or two but 4 whirlwind centuries in the game’s briefest format whilst wearing an Indian jersey.
There are certain things that only the talented Sky, as he’s lovingly called, could pull off. And yet, the most unremarkable thing ever happened to him in the form of being dropped from the team itself, the very bandwagon of exciting talents that he had helped guide to lift yet another World Cup crown.
From being someone who scored well over 3,200 runs in international T20 cricket to simply being snubbed for perhaps an ordinary tournament where despite not the runs, the big key leadership calls were in good effect, Suryakumar Yadav made news and for sad reasons.
You felt it. You really did when a cricketer of his redoubtable skill and power was snubbed for little fault of his other than the fact that the big runs had somehow eschewed his grasp for two or three months.
And a lot was said in the aftermath of it all. Shreyas Iyer led the side then in his absence and took the team to a disappointing tour of the UK, where India, it still surprises many, lost a T20 series to Ireland and were then harassed and harangued by England.
Successes didn’t come until the Zimbabwe tour but all that Suryakumar Yadav could do was to watch a unit that was now his former team.
It’s only now, half a year since the cherubic and charming World Cup victory that the castigated member of the Indian team has opened up on the big decision which quite simply changed the nature of his entire career.
Speaking to cricket expert Aakash Chopra, he would exclaim the following on a YouTube video interaction:
“I smiled when my name was not there. Because when I played cricket with the team for a year or two, and whenever I am playing, so whenever I have been in situations like where there is pressure, where things are not going my way, I have always smiled. I have relaxed. And this is what I have seen: the moments in the past when I have had opportunities to do well.”
“I have been grateful. Obviously, the situation that has come now, even I had not thought that this would happen. After coming in 2026, I felt that, going forward, I would be taking this team forward for another two years. The Olympics will come. Then there will be another T20 World Cup, another challenge going forward,” Yadav added.
“But at the same time, what you think and what the other person thinks are two different things. It is important for them to respect their own thoughts. If they thought that going forward, this is a better call, they took that call. But I didn’t react. Because I felt that this was their call. They took that call in that moment. Going forward, if this team can do well under someone else, no problem,” he concluded by saying.
And it ought to be said that much like his glowing batting that had little regard for the white ball, there’s a sense of grace in his words as well.
