The relations between India and Afghanistan have been going on since ancient times. Talking about the modern period, with its independence, India started friendly relations with Afghanistan. On January 4, 1950, an agreement was reached between the Government of India and the Royal Government of Afghanistan on a friendship treaty. In the year 1973, when Afghanistan became a republic, India immediately recognized it and recognized it.
Even in 1979, when the then Soviet Union attacked Afghanistan, then in the 198090s, India helped the people of Afghanistan on humanitarian grounds. Help the refugees and the students of Afghanistan were given the opportunity to study in India.
Embassy expands after Taliban collapse
In 1996, when the Taliban emerged in Afghanistan, its relations with India became stronger. Nevertheless, India left no stone unturned to help humanitarian help. After the collapse of the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001 with US intervention, Afghanistan’s reconstruction was started by India.
A BBC report quoted the Indian Embassy in Kabul as saying that India expanded its embassy in Afghanistan in March 2002. Then India opened consulate in Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, Kandahar and Jalalabad. In 2011, there was a severe drought in Afghanistan. India then provided two and a half million tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan.

Strengthening strength in the rebuilding of the country
The Parliament of Afghanistan has been built with the help of India. One of its blocks was named after former Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi in December 2015. There, India helped in the reconstruction of Salma Dam in Herat and it was built at a cost of about 2040 crores. Around 1500 engineers from both countries were engaged in its construction, which has a 42 MW power generation.
The dam, launched in 2016, was named the Indo-Afghanistan Maitri Dam. This is called Salma Dam. The transmission line was laid only with the help of India from Kabul to Phool-e-Khumri. India helped to revive the Indira Gandhi Institute for Child Health at Store Palace, Habibia High School, Kabul in Afghanistan.

Help in education, transport to security
India has been providing financial assistance to the Afghan National Agriculture Science and Technology University in Kandahar in other ways along with financial assistance. Apart from these, India has played an important role in the construction of Chimatla Power Substation in Kabul, Cricket Stadium in Kandhar to the construction of cold storage warehouse and upgrade telephone exchange, TV network.
India has provided hundreds of buses to Kabul, more than 285 military vehicles for Afghan National Army, Mi-25 and Mi-35 helicopters for Air Force there, ambulances for hospitals in different cities, aircraft for airlines.

Investment of three billion dollars
In fact, in 2014, India had signed an agreement with Afghanistan and Russia. Under this, Russia will provide necessary military equipment to Afghanistan and India will pay. Apart from this, India has also been trained by the public servants, police personnel and soldiers of Afghanistan. Even India has been training Afghan military officers in its military academies.
Indian companies had invested for mining of minerals gold, iron, copper etc. of Afghanistan. India had invested in more than a hundred companies in different regions, including communication, agriculture, information technology etc. The BBC report quoted the Indian Embassy as saying that by 2019, India had invested US $ 2 billion (Rs 139 billion) in Afghanistan. However, India had committed a total of US $ 3 billion investment there.
When the Taliban returned to Afghanistan in the year 2021, the two countries once again got angry. India stopped its diplomatic activities for some time through the embassy. The Taliban government did not even recognize. Despite this, Afghanistan continued to help on humanitarian grounds. During the Korona epidemic, India provided relief materials to Afghanistan with vaccine and medicines. Only in the year 2022-23, India had given 50 thousand metric tonnes of wheat and medicines to Afghanistan.
