ICSSR CSDS Notice: ICSSR has issued a show cause notice to CSDS. This notice is based on allegations of manipulation in voter data of 2024 Maharashtra elections by Sanjay Kumar of CSDS. Sanjay Kumar later apologized.
Election data controversy: ICSSR (Indian Council of Social Science Research) said that he would issue a cause notice to CSDS (Center for the Study of Developing Society) on the wrong claim made by Sanjay Kumar, co-director of public policy. Sanjay Kumar accused the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections of heavy change in voter numbers in four assembly constituencies of Maharashtra. He later removed the post. Apologizing, he had said that this mistake was due to misinterpretation of data.
ICSSR works under the Ministry of Education. It funds research in social science. ICSSR said in a statement shared on X that the “serious cognizance” of the incident has been taken. The CSDS had a biased interpretation of the sample verification made by the Election Commission. The ICSSR said, “ICSSR has taken serious cognizance of trying to create a story by CSDS manipulation in data and the Election Commission of India, to create a story.

The ICSSR said in its statement that it “honor” the Indian Constitution. The Election Commission is a constitutional body. It has been holding an independent and fair election in the world’s largest democracy for decades.
What is CSDS data rigging case?
CSDS data rigging dispute began with the posting of data on X by election analyst Sanjay Kumar. He claimed that there is a huge difference in the number of voters in Nashik West, Hingna, Ramtek and Delali between the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. He wrote in his deleted post that during the Lok Sabha elections, there were 3.28 lakh voters in Nashik West Assembly. In the assembly elections, it increased by 1.55 lakhs to 4.83 lakhs.
The voter number of Hingna Assembly increased from 3.15 lakh to 4.50 lakhs. In contrast, the number of voters in Ramtek decreased from 4.66 lakh to 2.87 lakhs. The number of voters in Delali decreased from 4.56 lakh to 2.88 lakhs.

Sanjay Kumar withdrew the data the next day and apologized and wrote, “There was a mistake while comparing the data of the 2024 Lok Sabha and 2024 assembly elections. The data given in the line was wrong by our data team. Now this tweet has been removed. I had no intention of spreading any misinformation information.”
