New Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has given a breather of three months to the USA Cricket for addressing the governance issues, as per multiple media reports. During a meeting in Singapore on July 19, Saturday, the global governing body has granted some more time to the USAC, which is under fire for not abiding by some governance issues.
On the other hand, a hybrid model of selection would decide the teams that will take part in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. The situation with the USA cricket is such that it has engaged in a conflict with the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), the country’s apex Olympic body over the same but has somehow managed to escape suspension.
USA to play big role in cricket’s Olympic return: ICC
The Jay Shah-led ICC believes that USA will play a pivotal role in cricket’s return to the Olympic Games three years later and despite serving them a notice last year in July for non compliance with governance rules, the ban has been paused for some more time.
At the last annual conference, it was decided that USAC has to set the things right within a particular time frame and further negligence would lead to bitter consequences. However, a visit from the concerned committee last month felt that the progress being made was not enough and they need to be given more time.
Since the Olympics are scheduled to be held in the country, the ICC has taken such a step. Had it been any other instance, the suspension of the USA cricket would have been the first step taken. USA is also an associate member nation and the cricketing body deemed it not fit that they should be suspended before giving another chance. Despite being the hosts, USA will not get a direct entry into the event. An official confirmation for the same is expected on Sunday as the four-day AGM has just begun.
