‘I have ambitions to continue’: Jos Buttler breaks silence on England future after poor T20 WC campaign

New Delhi: England opener Jos Buttler opened up about his international career after enduring a tough campaign at the 2026 T20 World Cup. The Three Lions have suffered a seven-run defeat against India in the semifinal of the tournament.

He scored just 87 runs in eight T20 World Cup matches, hitting just one fifty in his last four ICC tournaments. Despite his poor record, Buttler remains hopeful about participating in England’s home summer, which includes five T20I matches and three ODIs against India.

Buttler acknowledged that he had a poor T20 World Cup and is disappointed with his performance, but said that he’s playing well in recent years.

“So hopefully I can get back to playing my best. I certainly have ambitions (to continue playing for England), but no longer being a captain, I’m not a selector and whatever, so what will be will be. Yeah, we will see,” Buttler said on his For the Love of Cricket podcast.

‘I just felt like I needed some space from cricket’

After the conclusion of the T20 World Cup, the England opener took a break from cricket and spent a week with his family in France to mentally reset. He will return to India to prepare for the IPL 2026 with the Gujarat Titans.

“I couldn’t have been further away from cricket, which for me at the time was just perfect. It’s exactly what I needed. Obviously, the tournament didn’t go personally how I’d have liked it to go, and I just felt like I needed some space from cricket and not to think about the game, and I could not have been further away from cricket where I was in that week,” he added.

Buttler also hailed England’s management and defended the team environment created by skipper Harry Brook and head coach Brendon McCullum. He also praised the Indian team for their brilliant campiagn.

Gujarat Titans will open their IPL 2026 campaign against Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA Stadium in Chandigarh on March 31.
