‘I don’t think factory riders being able to test more is an advantage’ – Joan Mir

This year, Honda benefited from the highest level of development concessions in MotoGP, following poor results in previous seasons. However, Joan Mir argues that these theoretical advantages also come with drawbacks.

The Japanese manufacturer relied on just one test rider, and Mir explained that the additional workload on factory riders posed challenges:

– I don’t think that factory riders being able to test more is an advantage, because if the bike were better, I would be faster. That’s why we have a test team: if we go to test something and we stay an entire day between two race weeks, we don’t rest psychologically, and going to one test, race, one test, race, sometimes it’s worse.

For 2025, Honda’s test team will be strengthened with Aleix Espargaró and Takaaki Nakagami. Mir commented: ‘That’s probably why we have a test team, which is now being really reinforced. And I think we have to make them work to have proper stuff. What they think it’s working, we try in the GPs and see what is better’.
