Hyundai’s Fronx-rival spotted testing; launch likely in 2026

Hyundai is steadily progressing with its new compact SUV project for India, and the latest spy shots have offered another glimpse of the upcoming model during road tests. The crossover SUV is expected to occupy a unique position in Hyundai’s lineup, sitting above the Exter and alongside the Venue, while targeting popular rivals such as the Maruti Fronx, Toyota Taisor and Renault Kiger.

The recently captured test mule reveals several exterior details despite being heavily camouflaged. Up front, the SUV appears to feature a split-headlamp arrangement, with slim LED daytime running lights positioned higher on the fascia and the main lighting units mounted lower down. The overall setup bears similarities to Hyundai’s current design language seen on the Venue.

Earlier overseas sightings of the Bayon-based model had also hinted at a rugged lower bumper design finished with black cladding. Those prototypes additionally featured front parking sensors and a radar module, indicating that advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) could be part of the package.

Viewed from the side, the crossover’s silhouette closely mirrors the global-spec Hyundai Bayon sold in select international markets. The test vehicle was seen with newly designed alloy wheels, while silver roof rails further enhanced its SUV-like stance.

At the rear, Hyundai seems to have carried forward the split-lighting theme, creating visual continuity between the front and back. The prototype was also equipped with rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. Whether Hyundai will introduce a 360-degree camera system remains to be seen, although such a feature would help it compete more effectively against newer rivals in the segment.

One of the most significant highlights of the upcoming SUV could be its powertrain. Hyundai is reportedly developing a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that is expected to debut on this model. The new unit is likely to deliver stronger performance than the existing 1.0-litre turbo-petrol while offering better efficiency than the larger 1.5-litre turbo engine.

Lower variants may continue to use the familiar 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine currently available in models such as the Venue and i20 N Line.

The Bayon-inspired compact SUV is expected to arrive in India during the second quarter of FY2027, with pricing likely to remain close to that of the Venue.
