Up until a few months ago, Hyundai had a very capable mid-size SUV in its India portfolio. It took on popular rivals like the Jeep Compass and Tata Harrier. However, due to low demand, Hyundai discontinued the model in India. Now, though, it is back in an all-new avatar. Here’s what the Hyundai SUV offers in its new guise.
All-New Hyundai Tucson Revealed
The model we are talking about is none other than the Tucson. Hyundai recently debuted the all-new, fifth-generation Tucson in Korea. It is the most radical-looking Tucson to date. Stylistically, the new Tucson features split lighting units at the front and back. The overall look is quite modern and somewhat robot-like.
A much simpler interior complements the busy exterior design. The main tech highlights are a new touchscreen running the brand’s latest Pleos infotainment system and a basic but fully digital driver’s display mounted on top of the dashboard.
More importantly, the new Tucson is longer and wider than the outgoing model, and it even gets a longer wheelbase, so expect a more spacious cabin and better rear-seat space.
Internationally, Hyundai has revealed two powertrain options for the new Tucson: a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine and the same engine with a hybrid setup.
Is The New Hyundai Tucson Coming To India?
There is no official confirmation yet. However, given the SUV boom, Hyundai might consider bringing the new, fifth-generation Tucson to India. But we expect its bigger siblings, the Santa Fe (Sorento’s sibling and rival) and Palisade (a segment above the Toyota Fortuner), to launch in India before it.
Tucson’s History In India
The Hyundai Tucson has had a fairly long chapter in India. The first-generation model was launched here in 2004. At the time, it was considered one of the most stylish mid-size SUVs, although it didn’t find many takers. Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid received the car as a gift from the ICC, and once claimed in an interview that it’s one of his all-time favourite cars.
After a long gap, we got the third-generation model in 2016. Given its pricing and a gem of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, it was by far the most successful generation of the SUV in India.
In 2022, we got the fourth-generation model with a completely new look, but it was discontinued in 2025. It did not garner the popularity of the preceding generation.
