Hyderabad: A 33-year-old psychiatrist from Sanathnagar’s Czech Colony has died after suffering critical injuries in an apparent suicide attempt, prompting police to investigate allegations of sustained domestic abuse by her husband and in-laws. The woman, identified as Dr A. Rajitha, had reportedly endured months of emotional and physical torment within her marital home.
Her death followed two attempts to end her life, the second of which proved fatal. Police have registered a case based on a formal complaint lodged by her father, a serving Sub-Inspector, and are examining claims of abuse and exploitation by her husband and his family.
Counselor-patient relationship turns romantic
Rajitha first met her future husband, Rohit, during her postgraduate studies in psychology. While interning at a mental health facility in Banjara Hills, she counselled Rohit, who had been undergoing treatment there. Their acquaintance soon developed into a relationship. Rohit, who introduced himself as a software engineer, later expressed interest in marriage. Encouraged by both families and convinced she could aid in his long-term wellbeing, Rajitha agreed to the union.
However, the marriage reportedly soured shortly thereafter. Rohit is said to have stopped working and relied entirely on Rajitha’s income to sustain his lifestyle. Despite her appeals for him to take responsibility and contribute financially, his behaviour allegedly remained unchanged.
Family alleges abuse by husband, in-laws
According to her family, the situation escalated further when Rajitha became the target of persistent abuse from Rohit and his relatives, including his parents, Kishtaiah and Surekha, and his brother, Mohit. There are allegations that she was physically assaulted by Rohit, particularly when she refused to give him money.
2 suicide attempts in under 15 days
The emotional toll of the abuse appeared to take a serious turn on July 16, when Rajitha reportedly attempted to end her life by consuming an overdose of sleeping pills. She was hospitalised and, following her recovery, moved back in with her parents.
Less than two weeks later, on July 28, she made another suicide attempt, this time by jumping out of a bathroom window at her family’s fourth-floor residence. She suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in Ameerpet, where she was declared brain dead.
Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar Police have launched a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding Rajitha’s death.
