Humayun Kabir Formed New Party Janata Unnayan: West Bengal MLA Humayun Kabir launched his new political party ‘Janata Unnayan’ on Monday 22 December. Just a few days ago, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) had suspended him from the party over his decision to lay the foundation stone of a Babri-style mosque in Murshidabad district. Speaking at a public meeting in Beldanga, Kabir said that his party will contest the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. He gave the names of 8 candidates who will be fielded in the elections, although he did not tell how many seats the party will contest in total.

Mamata Banerjee should show by winning even one seat in Bengal

Humayun Kabir said, “I directly challenge Mamata Banerjee to show her winning even one seat in Bengal in the upcoming assembly elections. We will reduce Mamata Banerjee’s party to zero in Murshidabad. I also want to warn BJP. If they field candidates on 200 seats, I will show them winning 100 seats.

Kabir claims- I will become kingmaker after elections

Earlier, suspended MLA Humayun Kabir had claimed that he would emerge as a “kingmaker” in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. He had predicted that neither the ruling TMC nor the BJP would get a simple majority. It was also estimated that no party would be able to cross the mark of 148 seats in the 294-member assembly. Kabir said, “After the elections I will become the kingmaker. Without my support no one can form the government.” He further claimed that his new party will contest on 135 seats and will win enough seats to play a decisive role in forming the government. Humayun Kabir said, “Whoever goes to take oath as chief minister will need the support of my party’s MLAs.”

TMC did not give any reaction on Humayun Kabir’s new party

Trinamool Congress did not give any direct reaction on Humayun Kabir forming a new party. However, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while addressing a party meeting in Kolkata, accused the BJP of trying to create division among Muslims in Bengal. Meanwhile, BJP has rejected Kabir’s move. State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said Kabir would have no impact on the elections and accused him of indirectly helping TMC return to power.

BJP said- Mamta deliberately formed a party with Humayun.

BJP national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said, “Humayun Kabir is an agent of TMC. Mamata Banerjee has deliberately made Humayun Kabir form a party so that there is polarization and the Muslim voters angry with Mamata do not go to the opposition, but separate. This entire script has been written by Mamata Banerjee.”

What is the controversy about Babri Masjid of Bengal?

Two days later, on 6th December, on the anniversary of the demolition of Babri Masjid, Kabir laid the foundation stone of the mosque in Rejinagar. Also announced the formation of a new party.
