New Delhi: Switching from WhatsApp to a new app is never simple, especially in India where almost everyone’s daily life runs on Meta’s messaging platform. But Zoho’s Arattai app, a Made-in-India alternative, is trying to make that transition a little smoother. The app now supports importing your WhatsApp conversations directly, which means you don’t need to start from scratch with your chats.
For many users, the worry of losing old conversations is the biggest barrier to trying out a new messaging app. Arattai’s import option tries to solve this gap. It lets you move both personal and group chats into its system so that your conversations continue seamlessly.
Arattai already supports chat import. You can import WhatsApp chats either into a new group or an existing chat. Give it a try! 🚀

Exporting WhatsApp chats into Arattai
Before you begin, make sure that the person or group you are moving chats with has already installed Arattai on their phone. The app also needs permission to sync contacts. If your friend’s number doesn’t appear in Arattai, send them a simple “hi” to activate the thread. After that, the transfer process starts directly from WhatsApp.
Here’s how it works:
- Open WhatsApp and go to the settings of the chat you want to move. For this, tap the three dots on the top right.
- Choose the “More” option from the menu.
- Select Export Chats. At this stage, you will be asked whether to include media like photos and videos, or move only text.
- Once selected, WhatsApp will show you a list of apps where the chat can be exported.
- Choose Arattai from that list.
- After tapping the Arattai icon, you will see contacts who already use Arattai.
- Pick the contact or group, then press Import. The chats will begin transferring to the app.
The process is fairly straightforward, though it comes with one condition. The feature will only work if the contact has installed Arattai. If they are not on the app, you won’t be able to import their chat history.
Why this matters for Indian users
For years, WhatsApp has been the go-to app for messaging, business groups, family updates, and even wedding planning. Moving away often feels like shifting homes. With chat import support, Arattai is trying to lower that barrier and give users some continuity.
It also helps in conversations where old messages are crucial. For example, if you run a small business and keep records of customer orders on WhatsApp, shifting to Arattai without losing those chats could be a big relief.
What users should remember
The feature doesn’t yet offer full end-to-end encryption for chat messages on Arattai, though voice and video calls are encrypted. Experts say this is something Zoho will need to strengthen if the app wants to keep up with WhatsApp’s security standards.
Still, the ability to export chats is a rare feature among WhatsApp alternatives, and it could push more users to give Arattai a try. For now, anyone looking to move over can at least take their conversations along without hitting reset on their digital life.
