Syria joined with Egypt to form the United Arab Republic (UAR). After this, the currencies of both the countries were linked with the Egyptian pound. But when Syria separated in 1961, it started its own currency SYP. The biggest decline and economic crisis here started after 2011. The civil war worsened the situation in the country. Foreign investment was banned. There was a full stop on tourism. Oil production came to a halt and international sanctions were imposed. As a result, the currency here started declining rapidly.
