For what reasons are trains canceled during fog?
Trains are canceled during fog due to many reasons, which include-
- Dense fog becomes the biggest challenge for train drivers.
- Track signals are not visible.
- It becomes difficult to see a train in front, a person or an animal on the track.
- The speed has to be reduced very much, due to which the network gets jammed.
- Therefore, giving priority to safety, Railways cancels trains with less passengers first.
What are the grounds for canceling trains?
According to the Railway Ministry, Railways first cancels trains with less passengers. Efforts are made to run trains which have more number of passengers. This causes minimum problems to the passengers. The aim is that overcrowded or essential trains should not be stopped, that is, the decision is completely based on the occupancy rate (Train Load).
Which trains are considered ’empty’ or less crowded?
According to the Railway Ministry, these are those trains which are run to handle the seasonal crowd, these are called special trains, their operation can be stopped if necessary. Because these are not part of the regular service. For this reason, they are the first to be stopped during fog.

Are all special trains cancelled?
No. Railways does not stop all special trains. Railways cancels those trains which are running on foggy routes and where the number of passengers is very less for many days. For this, Railways now uses AI and data analysis. The decision to cancel trains is taken only after a complete study of which trains are continuously running empty, whose cancellation will cause less trouble to the passengers, on which routes the traffic will not be affected much.

- Full refund is given if the ticket is cancelled.
