Kotdi (Pakistan): A disturbing incident of communal and caste-based discrimination has come to light in Kotdi, Sindh. Here a young man from the Hindu Bagri community was brutally beaten to eat at a local dhaba. According to The Express Tribune, the victim, who has been identified as Daulat Bagri, went to a roadside road for lunch, when the hotel owner and many others objected to his presence. It is being told that the group tied Daulat’s hands and feet with a rope, brutally beaten and looted Rs 60,000 from his pocket.
Case filed against 7 people, but arrest is not one
Despite begging mercy, the attackers continued to attack him to “dare to eat there”. Later, a video of this attack went viral on social media, after which anger spread among the people and the demand for justice began to arise. Following this uproar, the Kotdi police registered a case against 7 accused- Fayaz Ali, Arshad Ali, Moin Ali, Shafi Muhammad, Niaz, Dar Muhammad and Ikram on a complaint of wealth. However, despite the FIR being registered, no arrests have been made so far, which has increased the lack of police action and serious concerns about the harassment on minorities in Sindh. Before the case was registered, a petition was filed against SSP and SHO Jamshoro in District and Sessions Court Jamshoro for not taking action. The police finally registered a case only after the petition was filed.
Hindu society raised voice to protect minorities
The incident has once again highlighted the systemic discrimination and violence faced by the Hindu minorities of Pakistan, especially marginalized communities like Bagri, who are constantly facing widespread bias and social boycott. Condemning the negligence of Pakistan, Dr. Sharma accused Pakistan of maintaining a kind of “religious apartheid”, violating the international human rights treaties. He said that the global community should not remain silent anymore, and the UNHRC should emphasize for immediate accountability and make sure that arrangements should be made for the safety of the distinguished minorities.
