The sage named his son Markandeya. The sage wife is always sad that her son has a young age, then Mrkand Rishi said that Mahadev has given it a boon and will protect it.
His father initiated the Shiva Mantra to the boy Markandeya. Since childhood, he became an exclusive devotee of Shiva. Markandeya decided that he would get a boon of longevity from Lord Shiva to convert the sorrow of his parents into happiness. Markande started worshiping Shiva. He sat on unbroken penance in the Shiva temple. At the same time, he composed Mahamrityunjaya Mantra.
Yamraj had to return empty handed
The 12 -year period was completed. Yamraj sent his messengers to bring the child, but Yamdoots came back after seeing Markandeya’s unbroken penance. He did not dare to touch Markandeya. When he came and told this to Yamraj, then Yamraj said that I will bring that child myself. Markande, who reached Yamraj Markandeya, was still absorbed in the penance of Shiva and was chanting Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. When the child saw Yamraj coming, he started chanting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra loudly and clung to the Shivling. On this, Yamraj tried to draw him when Lord Shiva appeared as a Shaktipunj. Taking a trident in his hands, he cautioned Yamraj that how did you dare to pull the devotee absorbed in my devotion. Yamraj started trembling due to fear. Yamraj said, Lord, you have given me this task of losing people’s lives. Then the anger of God calmed down and gave Markandeya a boon of longevity. After this, it said that after today, I will not do tragedy of the reciting Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. In this way, Markande attained longevity with the power of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and also defeated Kaal. Since then the power of this mantra became famous.
