Saff u17 champions: In the SAFF Under-17 Women’s Championships played in Thimpu, Bhutan, India created history despite a 3-4 defeat to Bangladesh. After six matches, with 15 points, the Indian team topped the league table and introduced their best game by becoming the winner of the tournament. How did India make the path of its victory?
India started the tournament with a stunning victory. India defeated Bangladesh 2–0 in the first league match between the two teams on 22 August. Four countries competed in the double round-robin format, with India’s only defeat. After five consecutive win, India won the title before Sunday’s match.

Exciting turn of the match: Bangladesh takes lead
As soon as the match began at the Changlimthang Stadium in Bhutan, Purnima Marma of Bangladesh scored a goal in the initial minute. In its ninth minute, Anushka Kumari of India scored an equal goal. Bangladesh’s Ali Akhtar again restored the lead in the 34th minute, but India’s Sauravi Preeti scored 3–1 in the 48th minute.
India’s return and dramatic finish
India made a strong comeback in the final phase of the match. Preetika Burman reduced the difference in the 65th minute and captain Julan brought the score to the 89th minute. But Preeti’s goal in Injari Time gave Bangladesh a final win. Nevertheless, the Indian team’s performance was enough to maintain them on top.
Does this victory mean that India is making a new path in women’s football?
This victory of India is not limited to topping the points table just. It is a symbol of the hard work, collective strategy and patience of young women players. The Indian team will practice in Bangalore to prepare for the AFC Under-17 Women’s Asian Cup qualifier to be held in Bishkek, the Republic of Kyrgyz in October.
