Benefits of breathing exercises
Increasing pollution damages the lungs. At present, the level of pollution has increased in Delhi NCR and other surrounding areas also. In such a situation, doctors are advising people to take precautions. Doctors also say that breathing exercises are beneficial in protecting against pollution and keeping the lungs healthy. Let us know what are the benefits of breathing exercises and when it should be done.
Experts say that breathing exercises can be beneficial in diseases like COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), asthma, and lung fibrosis. These exercises strengthen the diaphragm and increase its efficiency. These exercises improve the exchange of oxygen in the lungs. With this, the problem of breathlessness is also controlled to a great extent.
Dr. Vikas Mittal, Director, Department of Pulmonology at CK Birla Hospital, explains that people who earlier struggled with the problem of breathlessness even during short walks, gradually enable them to do more physical activity. This gives them more independence and improves the quality of life, allowing them to complete daily tasks with less fatigue.
Lower risk of hospitalization
Dr Vikas says that people who do breathing exercises regularly have less chances of being admitted to hospital due to any breathing related problem. Doing these exercises benefits patients with COPD, chronic asthma, lung fibrosis, or recovering from lung or upper abdominal surgery, including lung cancer surgery. Doing breathing exercises also increases the capacity of the lungs and makes you feel good.
Which breathing exercise is beneficial
Dr. Vikas says that breathing exercises like box breathing and Anulom Vilom are very beneficial. You can do these every day, however, if you already have any respiratory disease then consult your doctor before doing any kind of exercise. Do not do any exercise too suddenly and consult a doctor first.
