Holika Dahan 2026 Today Morning Muhurat: Today is the full moon of Phalgun month. The longest lunar eclipse of the year also occurred today. Its duration was 03 hours 27 minutes. This lunar eclipse occurred only in Leo and Purva Phalguni constellation. This lunar eclipse took place today at 03:20 pm. It ended at 06:46. Holika Dahan is performed on Phalgun Purnima.
However, in view of the lunar eclipse occurring today, Holika Dahan was performed in most of the states of India yesterday i.e. on 02 March. Because today, during the lunar eclipse, Holika Dahan or any other kind of worship is practiced. In such a situation, the question in people’s mind is whether Holika Dahan can be done after the lunar eclipse ends or not. Let us know about this in detail.
Can Holika be lit today?
Actually, every year the festival of Holika Dahan is celebrated on the full moon date of Phalgun month. According to Drik Panchang, this year the full moon of Phalgun month started at 05:55 pm on the evening of 02 March. This date will last till 05.07 pm today i.e. 03 March. The eclipse will end at 6:46 pm.
In such a situation, even before the eclipse ends today, the full moon date of Phalgun month will have ended. Pratipada Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month will start during the eclipse itself and burning Holika in Chaitra month is not considered as Shammat in the scriptures. These are all the reasons why Holika Dahan was done yesterday i.e. on 2nd March. Because even after the eclipse ends today, Holika cannot be lit.
Why is Holika Dahan done?
The story of Holika Dahan is related to devotee Prahlad. Devotee Prahlad was wanted to be killed by his father demon king Hiranyakashyam. Because Prahlad was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap did not like this thing. That is why Hiranyakashyap asked his sister to sit on the fire with Prahlad. So that Prahlad can be killed. As per the instructions of Hiranyakashyap, Holika sat in the fire with Prahlad in her lap and herself got burnt. Prahlad’s life was saved by the grace of Lord Vishnu.
