Holi 2026: 150 years old belief, why is Holi not played in these 2 villages of Uttarakhand?

Religious Beliefs Uttarakhand: While across the country, as soon as the month of Phagun arrives, the excitement of Holi begins and people are seen drenched in colors and gulal, there are two villages in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand where silence has prevailed for one and a half century. Holi festival is not celebrated in Khurjan and Quili villages of Rudraprayag. The surprising thing is that the people here neither apply colors to each other nor enjoy the dishes. What is the reason behind this, let us know.

Fear of Ishta Devi’s displeasure

The villagers believe that their presiding deity, Mother Tripura Sundari, does not like noise, hubbub and bright colours. The people of the village believe that if they play Holi, the peace of the Goddess will be disturbed and the entire village may have to suffer the consequences. For this reason, people here spend their time with simplicity and peace like a normal day. They worship the Goddess but do not use colours.

Tradition changed after the epidemic

According to local stories, the village people tried to play Holi about 150 to 300 years ago. Shortly after this, a terrible cholera epidemic spread in the village. Many people lost their lives. The villagers considered this incident to be divine wrath and believed that the Goddess had become angry due to the noise of Holi. Since then there was a complete ban on playing Holi in the village. Since then till today this tradition is continuing.

The tradition is still being followed today

Even though times have changed and Holi is celebrated with great pomp in the surrounding areas, the people of Khurjan and Quili still follow their traditions. The new generation also respects this belief of the elders. Special puja is done in the village on the day of Holi and emphasis is laid on maintaining peace.

The villagers believe that their village is safe and prosperous only by the grace of the Goddess. This tradition shows that different parts of India have their own beliefs and traditions regarding festivals. While on one hand Holi is a symbol of colors and enthusiasm across the country, on the other hand in these villages of Uttarakhand this day has become a symbol of faith, reverence and discipline.
