When will Holashtak 2026 start?
According to Ujjain’s Astrologer Pt. Nalin Sharma, this time Holashtak will start from 24th February, Tuesday, and will continue till 3rd March, Tuesday. Dhuredi festival will be celebrated on the last day of Holashtak i.e. 3rd March, which is also known as Holi festival. No auspicious work like marriage, naming ceremony, house warming, engagement etc. is done during the 8 days of Holashtak.

Lunar eclipse will occur on the last day of Holashtak
This time Holashtak will be very special because there is a coincidence of lunar eclipse on its last day i.e. 3rd March. The special thing is that this lunar eclipse will be visible in India also, hence all its rules like Sutak etc. will be valid here. This lunar eclipse will be visible in India only for 20 minutes.
Why is Holashtak considered inauspicious?
There is a story related to Holashtak, according to which, in ancient times there was a king of demons named Hiranyakashipu, who was an enemy of Lord Vishnu. Prahlad, son of Hiranyakashipu, was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. When Hiranyakashipu came to know about this, he explained it to his son but Prahlad still continued to worship Lord Vishnu. Seeing this, Hiranyakashipu became angry and decided to kill Prahlad. Hiranyakashipu tortured Prahlad in various ways for 8 consecutive days. These 8 days are called Holashtak. It is believed that during Holashtak, the nature of the planets becomes violent, hence auspicious work should not be done during this period.
