Hobby of going to salon can cause stroke, know how, research shows

risk of stroke

If you go to a salon, it is important to keep many things in mind. Recently, a study has revealed that wrong position of the neck while washing hair in the salon and hanging of the neck for a long time can cause stroke. This is called Beauty Parlor Stroke Syndrome (BPSS). Although this does not happen in every case, there can be a risk. This claim has been made in research published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine. This information has come to light in the investigation of 22 cases of stroke in the study. It has been told that wrong position of the neck in the salon can cause stroke. Its risk is higher in women.

This type of stroke is called Beauty Parlor Stroke Syndrome. This happens when the head is tilted backwards while washing the hair. This puts pressure on the nerves of the neck, obstructing the blood flow to the brain, which can lead to stroke. According to research data, 80% of such cases in this study were women. In most cases, symptoms appeared during or a few days after washing hair. Symptoms like dizziness and loss of balance, headache and vomiting, difficulty in speaking, weakness or paralysis in one part of the body were observed.

How much is the danger?

Dr. Daljit Singh, former HOD of Neurosurgery Department at GB Pant Hospital, Delhi, says that such cases occur very rarely, but it is not right to keep the neck hanging for a long time. This can cause stroke. In such a situation, some things need to be kept in mind. Do not tilt the head back too much while washing hair. Use a towel or pillow for the neck in the salon.
