What are the names of 12 months of Hindu calendar?
The name of the first month of the Hindu calendar is Chaitra, that is, the Hindu New Year begins from this month. After this come the months of Vaishakh, Jyeshtha, Ashadh, Sawan, Bhadau, Ashwin, Kartik, Agahan, Paush, Magh and Phalgun. Thus Phalgun is the last month of the Hindu calendar. According to astrology, the Moon is the nearest planet to the Earth. The Moon completes one revolution around the Earth in 28 to 29 days. During this period the Moon completes the cycle of 12 zodiac signs and 27 constellations. The last date of the lunar month is the full moon. The month is named according to the date on which the Moon occurs on the Purnima Tithi, just as the Moon occurs in Chitra Nakshatra on the Purnima of Chaitra month, hence this month is named Chaitra.

1. This month has been named Chaitra because the Moon is in Chitra Nakshatra on the last day of the first month of the year i.e. on the full moon day.

3. On the full moon of the third month, the Moon is in Jyestha Nakshatra, due to which this month is named Jyestha.
4. On the full moon day of the fourth month, the Moon is in Uttarashadha Nakshatra, due to which this month is called Aashadha.
5. On the full moon of the fifth month, the Moon is in Shravan Nakshatra, due to which this month got its name Shravan.
6. The name of the sixth month is Bhadrapada because on the full moon of this month the Moon remains in Purva Bhadrapada Nakshatra.
7. The name of the seventh month is Ashwin, because on the full moon day of this month the Moon is in Ashwini Nakshatra.
8. On the full moon of the eighth month, the Moon is in Krittika Nakshatra, due to which this month is named Kartik.
