Himachal Pradesh battles devastating monsoon, 340 dead from landslides & floods

New Delhi: Himachal Pradesh is battling one of its most severe monsoon disasters in recent history. The relentless monsoon rains, beginning in June 2025, have caused widespread destruction across the state, resulting in a tragic loss of life and significant infrastructural damage. The official death toll currently stands at 340, with 41 individuals still reported missing. These figures represent a grim reality of the scale of the disaster.

The impact of the monsoon has been devastating. Landslides have blocked over 1,337 roads, including four major national highways, effectively isolating numerous communities. The collapse of the Old Manali bridge has stranded locals and tourists, disrupting essential travel and access to vital services. Swollen rivers, notably the Beas River, and overflowing streams have further exacerbated the situation, washing away crucial infrastructure and adding to the challenges faced by rescue teams.

The intensity of the rainfall has been unrelenting. The state has recorded 95 flash floods, 45 cloud bursts, and 121 major landslides, highlighting the extreme weather conditions that have contributed to the crisis. This has severely impacted apple growers, who are unable to transport their harvest to market due to severed road access. The disruption extends beyond transportation, affecting power and water supplies in many regions. Over 2,100 transformers and 777 water supply schemes have been disrupted as of Monday. The financial toll is equally significant, with officials estimating the total damage to exceed Rs 3,523 crore.

Rescue and relief efforts are underway, with teams from the NDRF and SDRF working tirelessly to reach those trapped and provide assistance. However, the ongoing heavy rainfall and continued risk of landslides significantly hamper these efforts. Thousands of pilgrims remain stranded in Chamba, following the Mani Mahesh Yatra, adding to the immense logistical challenges. In several affected districts, including Shimla, Kangra, Sirmaur, and Kullu, schools and other educational institutions have been closed, with online classes being arranged where possible.
